Magazine plans to license branded items through new deal.
*Soon you'll see the name "Ebony" on more than just the cover of its historic magazine. According to the Chicago Sun- Times, Johnson Publishing Co., the Chi- Town-based publisher of the magazine, plans to license the name for use on merchandise that targets minority consumers.
"We have built up the brand name of Ebony over the last 60 years, and it's a name that's very well recognized," Johnson Publishing Co's Chief Executive Linda Johnson Rice told the Sun Times. "I thought this would be a growth opportunity for the company, and a great way to brand the name in other areas."
Rice's company has signed a deal with TurnerPatterson, a licensing and marketing company in CA catering to the minority market. Both entities look forward to a variety of products with the Ebony name, including games and toys, clothing, mobile technology products and financial products like credit cards and mortgages.
But don't expect to see Ebony shot glasses, reports the Sun Times. Rice said the company would make sure that the products it approves are within a certain parameter.
"It's got to be reflective of what the magazine is about. It's a family magazine," she said. at the Licensing International 2005 Show this week in New York City.
